The Gaza War is 1000 Times Worse Than the Ukraine War
by John Lawrence
Putin has been called very bad names since the war in Ukraine started in February 2022. On the other hand, Netanyahu has been let off the hook although he is responsible not only for killing more civilians per day, but also shutting off water and humanitarian assistance for Gazans. It has been approximately 1200 days since the Ukraine war started, and approximately 13,000 civilians have been killed. which is about 11 a day. The war in Gaza has been going on about 545 days since October 2023 and about 50,000 civilians have been killed or about 92 per day. So who is the more terrible person - Putin or Netanyahu? Netanyahu has denied even humanitarian assistance to Gaza with the result that children are starving. According to Al Jazeera, Israel kills a child in Gaza every 45 minutes. That is an average of 30 children killed every day over the past 535 days. According to Unicef, there have been an average of at least 16 children killed or injured in Ukraine every week or 2.3 children per day. While it is difficult getting humanitarian aid to some areas in Ukraine, humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza is currently essentially impossible. Children in Gaza are dying from starvation. According to Al Jazeera on May 2, 2025, thousands of Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip are facing an increased threat of starvation, the United Nations has warned, as Israel’s continued blockade of food, water and other critical supplies to the besieged and bombarded coastal territory enters its third month. The UN’s child rights agency (UNICEF) said on Friday that more than 9,000 children had been admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition since the start of the year.
By any measure the war in Gaza has caused more suffering than the war in Ukraine, yet Netanyahu is considered basically a good person and Putin has been considered a demon. When the war ends in Ukraine, Ukraine will at least have a sovereign country although minus some territory. The existence of Gaza as an entity is in doubt. Israel may incorporate it into Israel and deport the Gazans to somewhere else. That's what Trump wants so he can build his Trump hotel on the Gazan Riviera. The existence of the West Bank is also in doubt. Israel could force the Palestinians out of there as well and incorporate that area into Israel. Then Israel would have "from the river to the sea" with a Trump tower to boot.
Genocide is defined as the intentional and systematic destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. It's a crime defined by the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a protected group, and involves acts like killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, and imposing conditions of life to destroy the group. This sounds like pretty much like what is happening in Gaza, but not in Ukraine. Trump's ideas about ending the war in Ukraine, however inept in their execution, make some sort of sense. He gets credit in my opinion for at least opening the lines of communication with Russia. Joe Biden made a pariah out of Putin, and wouldn't even talk to him with the result that there was no off ramp to the war. With Trump there is at least an off ramp if they can summon the expertise to pursue it intelligently which is certainly not guaranteed by any means. As far as Trump's intentions for Israel, they seem to be in line with forcing the Palestinians off their land. Netanyahu is in the process of making life for the Palestinians in Gaza an untenable hell. So either someone will expedite their becoming refugees in some other country or Israel will starve or kill them all. Trump is aligned with Israel in getting them out one way or the other. The fate of the hostages at this point is probably that they will never come home to Israel. Their fate seems of little concern to any country including Israel. They have been written off.
