Aging is not “getting old.” We will all age. Gravity has its way with us. But we do not have to get old. That is a mental state, a perception of who we are. Staying ageless is about passion, curiosity, learning new things, playfulness, participation in things that make us feel useful and/or joyful. That is a short list. Most of us do not feel we are a different person from who we were at 10 or 12 years of age. We are wiser, perhaps, and have some accumulated knowledge; but we are the same Self looking out through these eyes. We are still wholly present and whole.
It is the ever-present Self that overcomes life’s serious challenges. We may lose limbs in war, be physically restricted, but that ageless Being will find ways to play, to love, to participate, regardless of the injury. Just look at the Para-Olympics. Those athletes have shown their strength, adaptability, determination and refusal to give up on their own life. The Self that we are is truly indestructible.
The key to happiness and to conquering what seems insurmountable, is Self- Identity. We innately know this. That is why we are sensitive to what terms we use to describe each other. People are no longer blind, retarded, handicapped, crippled, dumb or crazy. We are awakening somewhat to the spiritual truth of our never damaged soul. Labels are ignorant attempts to categorize us; but there will always be that Self who is unique and in charge. That Self never gets old.
Affirm: “My Real Self is free to Be, all the time, at any age, no matter what.”
