My friend, Rev David Leonard says, ‘if I don’t know the answer, I stay in the question.’ What is the question today? Perhaps; how can I keep my spiritual resolve to know the best in people when I see such horrible things on the news? Every day there are reports of the most unconscious, brutal acts perpetrated on innocent people by other humans. Why are some people so eager to hurt others? Why is there so much unresolved anger? Where did this hatred for difference begin?
Yes, of course I want to stay focused on the larger reality; that most humans are kind and compassionate; that wonderful new inventions are helping the problems of pollution; that good people are serving the needs of the homeless; that most of us support those agencies financially; that good things are happening. It seems there is more good than evil but evil is so against our true nature that we cannot ignore it.
How did humans get so far from their spiritual roots? Was it patriarchal religion that led to the abuse of children who grew up seeking some kind of power? Was it the superstitious idea that God was far away and that there is an equally influential power called the devil vying for our attention? Was it a culture that promoted the have and the have nots? Was it the belief in Lack that led to greed and corruption? One thing we do know. People act out their basic beliefs about God, their own self-worth, what they think they have a right to expect, what gives them some kind of satisfaction, and what makes them feel “right.”
The question becomes “what will it take to help humanity awaken to its spiritual magnificence? What must I do?
