The essence of spirituality must surely be Love. But there are so many levels of meaning in that one little word. The kind of Love that arises from a realization of our oneness is the most elevated experience we can have. Of course, young lovers feel that oneness but it does not last in the face of daily living. In fact, it is necessary to see each other as separate in order to develop the relationship. (Ironically, the unspoken goal is to get back to that feeling of oneness.)
Children feel one with Nature. They are enchanted with animals and flowers and water. Left to their own devices they develop a healthy relationship with the natural world and a love of it follows them throughout their lifetime. Many of today’s kids rarely interact with her. They are living in an electronic world almost to the exclusion of time spent in Nature. Family vacations to the beach or mountains are not enough to reawaken that sense of oneness with Life. There is a disconnect and we know what happens when there is no sense of love and responsibility for the health of our planet.
Any religion that approves of the decimation of natural life is not a religion with spirituality in it; it is devoid of Love. The new science that is moving toward the proof that every thing is connected; that we are all arising from One Source; that Nature is life-supporting and absolutely necessary to our health and well-being, will challenge those old ideas. Science and Spirituality are beginning to walk hand in hand. Let’s do our part in making sure our actions and choices reflect our love for all Life in all its forms.
