Is Springtime your favorite season? It is for lots of us. We respond at the cellular level to the opening of buds, the greening of trees, the return of birds and butterflies. We love the symbols of rebirth; the decorated eggs and the candy ducklings and chicks. That old saying,” in the Spring a young man’s fancy turns to love and romance” is probably true. It is also the time of spring-cleaning or cleansing. It is renewal time.
Everyone loves the idea of being made new. Hardly anyone loves the process of getting there. Who wants to take a serious look at their mistaken beliefs, their limiting ideas, their unresolved conflicts? There is another way, however, and it has to do with spiritual practice. We learn so much by simply sitting in silence, doing nothing. Over time it has a cleansing effect on our self-awareness. Why? Because there is a you and a me that has no sense of limitation, no resentments, conflicts or false beliefs. It is simply the bliss of Being. It is an energy that seeps through our awareness a little bit more every time we meditate. It renews our self-identity.
Meditation is rather like a cosmic broom, sweeping away the debris of neglect. Like cleaning out the attic, some dust is churned up at first. But over time the beauty of the space is revealed. We support the emergence of bliss with regular affirmative declarations and with daily silence. Yes, we have a psychological component but it is nothing compared to the Self. It cannot remain the lead consciousness once we have reclaimed our natural bliss.
