Democrats Need to Put Forth Bold Agenda and Stop Talking About Trump
by John Lawrence, April 24, 2019
The focus needs to be on Medicare for All and a Green New Deal. Take the focus off of Trump. The media loves Trump because his antics make them money. The nation should be hearing about the Democrats' agenda, not Trump's supposed transgressions and peccadilloes. The more the spotlight is on Trump, the more Democrats appear to be whiners. Forget about Trump; he's irrelevant at this point. He doesn't deserve all the media attention. The media should be focused on the future of the country. I agree with Bernie Sanders. Focusing on Trump's inadequacies is a losing strategy. The next election should be about the future, not about Trump.Trump's supporters are going to vote for him no matter what. The Democrats have to work as a team to put the focus on them and their agenda. The next election should not be about personalities.
Medicare for All need not mean Medicare for Everyone. If some people like their employer based plan, they should keep it. Those that don't or those that don't have an employer based plan should be eligible to join Medicare. The cost containment features of Medicare need to be strengthened. Medical professionals have been ripping off Medicare for years. Pharmaceutical companies need to be brought under control. They have been ripping off the American public. The cost containment features of Obamacare were nonexistent. That was the problem with Obamacare. This is what the media should be talking about - not Trump's personality. Get the focus off of Trump. The future of the country is not all about social media.
If we have any hope of reducing economic inequality and saving the planet from the worst ravages of climate change, we have to get started with a Green New Deal. It covers two bases: the economy and the climate. It is about bringing the US into the future, a future where energy is supplied by renewable energy. The economy based on oil has to be terminated not by the market which is acting all too slowly, but by government. Last year GHGs actually increased. We're going in the wrong direction, my friends. We need an effort that combines the best aspects of the New Deal which fought the Great Depression and the build-up to WW II which took place in order to win that war. The focus needs to be on the country's and the world's future not on Trump's personality.
Actually, Trump's friendship with Vladimir Putin may have been a good thing. It signified evidently not collusion over the election but a reduction in tensions between the US and Russia. Instead Trump was dissuaded from continuing this friendship just as he has been dissuaded from his friendship with Kim Jong Un. The establishment does not want to make friends out of enemies because they would lose money. I have no doubt that Trump's defunct friendship with Putin was based on business interests rather than a "conspiracy" of some sort. Trump wanted to build a Trump Tower Moscow. It might have been a good thing. Anything, including individual economic interests, that decreases tensions and brings about a more peaceful world is worthwhile even if it enriches the likes of a despicable asshole like Trump.
Democrats should put further investigations of Trump totally in the background. The next election needs to be about the future of the country. Instead the Democrats are going down the road of making it all about Trump. That strategy will backfire on them and Trump will get reelected.
