Roger Egret was back at my pond yesterday and he brought the two ducks with him! I am happy he has made friends. It must be lonely to be the only one of your kind around; to have to forage for food all by yourself. Now he has a couple of experienced hunters to help him get breakfast. He stands in the pond close to where they are floating. He seems calmer to me.
Having friends to share our life with makes it an adventure. We laugh at our less than skillful moments and cry together when things are tough. Mostly it is good for the soul to be seen and known for who we really are without the need to impress. I bet those ducks feel safer, too, with Roger around. He is quite large and when he spreads his wings even the squirrels take off. Sometimes friends are more loyal to us than family. It doesn’t matter if we are not blood relatives. Mutual appreciation for the whole person is the best gift we can give each other.
Some of my favorite people have passed on but they remain my friends. When I think of them I smile. Sometimes I talk to them. I feel their presence. I always love it when I am introduced as “this is my friend, Carol.” It is an honorable designation. I am happy for my friends' successes, and I try to be there, encouraging, when life is not so blissful. Like you, I can be the big bird or the attending duck. Both roles are valuable.
Affirm: I value my friends. I value myself as a friend. I am blessed to be seen and known with all my flaws, quirks and strengths.”
