It is easy to be religious and follow a set of rules. It takes no deep thought to do what has been handed down as Truth. The lie will be protected by the very people it oppresses, without their ever getting the joke. Poverty is not a gift to God. The church is not God’s house. It is a building that requires maintenance. Someone who traveled with Mohandas K Gandhi said “It takes a lot of money to keep Gandhi poor.” It is expensive to maintain the church but the church is rich because of its supporters, many of whom are very poor. God is not something to worship while injustice prevails.
It is much more of a challenge to be spiritually aware in a world of ignorance. To be spiritual is to be compassionate; to seek justice; to see all beings as equally deserving of the basics; shelter, food, clean water and air. To be spiritual is to love Nature, care for her with awe and respect.
It is just plain lazy to ascribe the horrors we inflict on one another as “God’s will.” In this age of science and technology, wisdom is needed. Wisdom is missing in much of religion. It is not devotion that is the problem, it is the institutionalized superstition and dogma that causes such terrible behaviors in those who do not question, but merely obey. The illusion of power is a deadly force.
Spirituality does not deny the reality of a responsive intelligence in this universe. However, it does not give it form nor personality. It is a principle of partnership; the personal and the universal in residence in our own Being. The Universal can “answer our prayers” through the avenue of imagination, belief and our willingness to be the vehicle through which the solution comes. That is the spiritual path.
