The fear of death is rather futile when considered this way; if there is nothing after physical demise, then we won’t even know it. If there is something, then great, a brand new experience awaits us. It is the belief in a punishing God that bothers many people. The possibility of going to “hell” is frightening. One of the many aspects of New Thought spirituality that is so healing is the insistence that Life is for us and never against us. That means a loving God or a Source that is invested in our Good. It does not punish nor reward but functions in time and space as a principle of natural consequences of our choices.
The time to get right with the principle is now. We have full say in how we act in this life. Our capacity for love is as great as our use of it and the same is true of all the qualities we attribute to God. We seem to be extensions of It, not creations. Marcus Aurelius said “sunlight doesn’t pour out, it extends. It’s rays are extensions of it.” Just so, God did not create us and leave us to flounder around trying to survive; we are extensions of it and by continuing the extension through our actions, we reveal it here.
The life we live now is Reality. What lies beyond will be nothing or something but need not concern us today. Our time here is a playground of possibility. Shall we choose to be negative, angry, irritated most of the time, critical of everyone else or shall we choose happiness, fun, love and good relationships? What would keep us from making that choice? Certainly not fear of death. Perhaps fear of Life.
