TV News Keeps to its Trivial Formula
by John Lawrence, September 20, 2018
Yesterday the TV news reported details on two mass shootings. So what else is new? These go on every day and are not worth reporting. It's sensationalism run amok! Why don't they have an informed discussion on gun control instead? Mass shootings are not worthy of being reported. But entertainment TV has merged with reality TV. Also it was reported that Trump said something like he couldn't imagine that Brett Kavanaugh, nice guy that he is, would have tried to rape a girl in high school. So what? Who cares what Trump thinks or what Trump can or can't imagine? The vacuity of the news in the US is appalling. You have to tune in to a foreign news channel to get news that doesn't insult your intelligence.
Meanwhile, nothing is reported about the Trump administration's changing the rules allowing more methane emissions into the atmosphere. Nothing is reported about the US complicity in the slaughter of children in Yemen from starvation and cholera. Nothing is reported about the trillion dollar US defense budget with bases ringing every country in the world. Nothing is reported about the effects of climate change driving disasters like Hurricane Florence. The only thing reported about that is Trump's false promises that the Feds are going to help all those brave souls in the Carolinas who have lost so much and all the brave and wonderful people who have risked their lives to help them. Americans helping Americans. How wonderful and noble! They don't need no Federal gubmint to get them out of a jam.
Forget all the vacuous interviews with people who say things like, "I've been here 40 years, and I've never seen anything like it." Well, I don't think they'll have to wait 40 years to see something like it again. Climate change will continue to up the ante on the tragedies and devastation wreaking havoc on Mother Earth, and Trump and his cronies are doing their best to hasten the destruction.
