On a recent flight my seat mate was a young woman whose life story was truly epic, as in one traumatic event after another. Naturally she asked what I did and when I replied ‘spiritual teacher’ she perked up. She wanted to know more. I was not surprised when she said that she did not believe any of the religious dogma she had grown up with, but that what I was sharing made sense to her. It was a rich conversation that underscored my awareness of the millions of people who are rejecting old-time religions but have not yet discovered the New Story.
As Joseph Campbell advised, we need a new mythology to guide us on our journey through this life. The New Story is what we currently perceive as applicable to all people, everywhere. It is liberating and empowering. It is free of superstition and dogma. It places the Source (what has been known as God) right within our own Being. It is a way of living that allows us to choose how we shall live, and to know that everything seen arose from the unseen realm of awareness.
In speaking with that young woman I felt a renewed responsibility to her generation to get the word out, so to speak. Not in a missionary sense, because we are not trying to get them to join anything, but to offer a way out of the repetitive and destructive effects that have come from a superstitious view of our origins. The Power within the universe and all sentient life is located in the field of Mind which we each individualize. In other words, you are the answer which you have been seeking.
